Cross in the New Testament
NAS Matthew 10:38 "And he who does not
take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. (Brean Study
Bible: The "cross" is a powerful symbol of suffering,
sacrifice, and redemption. In the Roman world, the cross was an instrument of
shame and death, yet Jesus transforms it into a symbol of hope and salvation.
The Greek word "σταυρός"
(stauros) refers to this instrument of execution. For
early Christians, this phrase would have resonated deeply, as many faced
persecution and martyrdom. It calls believers to a life of self-denial and
willingness to endure hardship for the sake of Christ.)
NAS Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His
disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and
take up his cross, and follow Me. (See above.)
NAS Matthew 27:32 And as they were coming out,
they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear
His cross. (“Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross”)
40 and saying, "You
who are going to destroy the temple
and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come
down from the cross." (Mockers: “save Yourself! If You are the Son of God,

42 "He saved others;
He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from
the cross, and we shall believe in Him. (Mockers: “let Him now come down from
the cross, and we shall believe in Him”)
NAS Mark 8:34 And He summoned the
multitude with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come
after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
NAS Mark 15:21 And they pressed into
service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of
Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross. (“Simon of Cyrene (the father of
Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross”)
30 save Yourself, and
come down from the cross!" (All)
32 "Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now
come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" And those who
were crucified with Him were casting the same insult at Him. (Re Jesus: “come

between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish
to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'
NAS Luke 23:26 And when they led Him away,
they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed
on him the cross to carry behind Jesus. (“Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the

did these things. But there were standing by the cross of Jesus His mother, and
His mother's sister, Mary the wife of
Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. (Women: “standing by the cross of Jesus”)

18 For the word of the
cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved
it is the power of God. (‘word of the cross” … “saved” … “power of God”)
NAS Galatians 5:11 But I, brethren, if I still
preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the
cross has been abolished. (Stumbling block and cross.)
NAS Galatians 6:12 Those who desire to make a
good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply that they
may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. (Cross and persecution.)
