BIBLICAL CONCEPT:  Tongues from a Biblical perspective

1)  Tongues were for unbeliever evangelism - 1 Cor. 14:22-23 cp. with
     Acts 2:8-11.

2)  Five wise words were worth more than ten-thousand words in a
     tongue - 1 Corinthians 14:19.

3)  Tongues are last on the list of Spiritual gifts in 1 Cor. 12:28.

4)  The Spiritual gift of tongues was not primarily for personal edification -
     1 Pt. 4:10.

5)  According to 1 Cor. 13:8-10, the Spiritual gifts of prophecy, tongues,
and knowledge would one day "cease" when the "perfect comes."
"Perfect" is the Greek word teleios and is used again in 1 Cor. 14:20.
There it is translated "mature." Perhaps teleios should also be translated
"mature" in 1 Corinthians 13:10?  As the infant Church "matured" the
"partial" (tongues) would go away.  This is exactly what happened
according to Hebrews 2:3-4.  The second generation Christians did not
have the signs and wonders of "them," the first generation of believers.
This ceasing is also evident in that there are no miracle working Spiritual
Gifts operating today; that can raise the dead and instantly, permanently,
     cure disease, etc.

6)  Even when tongues were in operation, not all spoke with tongues - 1
     Cor. 12:30.

7)  Tongues are not among the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), spiritual
armor (Eph. 6:10-18), the life of faith (Eph. 5:18; Col. 3:12-17), or
required for Church leaders (1 Tim. 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9).
