1. The spiritual gifts
of prophecy, tongues and knowledge helped the first
or founding generation of
the church become established.
2. 1 Cor. 13:8-10 states
that these gifts would “be done away” or
“cease” when the “perfect”
comes. “Perfect” is the Greek word teleios.
The next and last time that
Paul uses teleios in I Cor. is in 14:20, “in your
thinking be mature.” The context
has defined “perfect” for us. Paul is
talking about the “maturing”
of the church. When the church becomes
more “mature,” these “gifts”
would not be needed. Note the “maturity”
theme in 1 Cor. 13:11-12;
14:3-5, 12 and 20. In general, 1 Cor. 13 &
14 addresses the immature,
arrogant way that the Corinthians were using
“tongues.”
3. James 2:3-4, written
by a second generation church member, states
that the “signs and wonders”
gifts were for the first generation of
Christians. These had
“ceased” for his generation.
