Biblical Concept: Prophecies of Messiah

Prologue: Jesus to the Emmaus Disciples - Luke 24:25-27  25 And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!  26 "Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"  27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

Introduction: “The language of Messianic prophecy is often obscure.  The divine intent in this obscurity is to render the prophecy understandable only by true believers in God who are taught by the Holy Spirit and who therefore are able to discern passages belonging to genuine Messianic prediction.  Many of these passages cannot be interpreted except in the light of the entire content of the Word of God” (Walvoord, Jesus Christ Our Lord, p. 82).

NAS Genesis 3:14 And the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly shall you go, And dust shall you eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel." (Various Rabbis interpret this as Messianic.)

NAS Isaiah 53:5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. (Cited in 1 Peter 2:24.)

NAS Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD. (Cited in Luke 4:18.)

NAS Jeremiah 23:5 "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land. 6 "In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, 'The LORD our righteousness.'

His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.

NAS Daniel 9:25 "So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 "Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. NAS Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born.

NAS Malachi 3:1 "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming," says the LORD of hosts. 2 "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. 3 "And He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness. (Cited in Matthew 11:10.)

Conclusion: “Taken as a whole, the Old Testament provides a remarkable picture of the coming Messiah.  He is to be preceded by a messenger, to be a Savior and Deliverer, to execute the offices of Prophet , Priest and King, to be a cornerstone and foundation, to fulfill the expectation of an obedient Servant of Jehovah who would redeem His people, and is to perform good and miraculous works.  His works and teachings were to manifest the power of the Spirit of Jehovah (Isa. 11:2-3)” (Walvoord, Jesus Christ Our Lord, p. 91).

Epilogue: 1 Corinthians 10:3-4  3 and all ate the same spiritual food;  4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
