Biblical Concept: Looking for Messiah

 

The prophecy of Daniel 9:25-26 had those living during Jesus’ day “in a state of expectation”, because of the math. 

 

John 1:19-28, Jews: Seeking the identity of John. Looking for the Messiah.

John 1:20-21, Looking for the Messiah. See Luke 3:15.

John 1:20b, “the Christ” see also 1:25, 3:28, 4:29, 7:26, 7:31, 7:41, 7:42, 10:24, 11:27,

12:34 and 20:31.

John 1:21b, The Prophet = Deuteronomy 18:15-19.

John 1:22-28, Pharisees seek John’s identity and reasons for his actions.

 

NAS Daniel 9:25 "So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 "Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.

 

A “decree” to rebuild Jerusalem was made by the Persian King Artaxerxes Longimanus in 445 B.C.  See Nehemiah 2:1-10. 

 

seven weeks and sixty-two weeks” = 483 years x 360 days = 173,880 days = Christ’s triumphal entry on April 6th 32 A.D. 

 

NAS Luke 3:15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he might be the Christ,

 

NAS Luke 19:11 And while they were listening to these things, He went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.

NAS Deuteronomy 18:15 "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. 16 "This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, lest I die.' 17 "And the LORD said to me, 'They have spoken well. 18 'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 'And it shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.
