Biblical Concept: Leading, Divine

Observations:

God’s incalculable omniscience and omnipotence qualify Him to lead.  (Isaiah 40:26  26 Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power Not one of them is missing.)

Christ is the leader for the Christian.  (Matthew 23:10   10 "And do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.)

God’s leading is just. (Psalm 25:9  9 He leads the humble in justice, And He teaches the humble His way.)

God’s leading is righteous. (Psalm 5:8   8 O LORD, lead me in Thy righteousness because of my foes; Make Thy way straight before me.

God’s leading of Abraham from Ur to Canaan was unique.  (Joshua 24:3   3 'Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him through all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.)

God’s personal, visible, leading of nation Israel for 40 years in the wilderness is rather remarkable.  The cloud pillar and the fire pillar must have been quite a sight to non-Israelites. (Exodus 13:21   21 And the LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.) (Deuteronomy 8:2  2 "And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.) (Amos 2:10  10 "And it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, And I led you in the wilderness forty years That you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.)

Divine leading for millennial Israel.  (Isaiah 49:10  10 "They will not hunger or thirst, Neither will the scorching heat or sun strike them down; For He who has compassion on them will lead them, And will guide them to springs of water.)

The God-Man Jesus Christ was led by the Holy Spirit. (Luke 4:1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led about by the Spirit in the wilderness.)

The Christian, the believer in the Biblical Jesus Christ, is lead by the Holy Spirit:

Romans 8:14  14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Galatians 5:18  18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

It is interesting to note that the context of these two passages touches on the problem of flesh versus Spirit.   The passage contexts are provided below (hyperlinks: Romans 8:14 and Galatians 5:18), and contain quite a bit of theology.  We humans are in a fix--our flesh fighting against the Holy Spirit!   The human needs to use their volition to want to be led by the Spirit instead of their flesh.  The desire to be led by the Spirit is an important step in how to be led by the Spirit.  A recognition of the need to be led is another way to think of it.  “Led” in both verses (Romans 8:14 and Galatians 5:18) are verbs that employ an indicative present passive inflection and describe the need of being led as a continual reality for the believing human.  A continual desire to be led is the human’s contribution to the process of “being led.”  Humbling for one’s flesh me thinks.

God uses truth and teaching to lead believers in Him:

2 Corinthians 2:14  14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.

Psalm 25:5   5 Lead me in Thy truth and teach me, For Thou art the God of my salvation; For Thee I wait all the day.

Psalm 43:3   3 O send out Thy light and Thy truth, let them lead me; Let them bring me to Thy holy hill, And to Thy dwelling places.

God leads humans to eternal life:

2 Timothy 3:15   15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads

to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:24   24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith.

Romans 2:4  4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

The negative relationship between being led and rebellion. (Psalm 68:6  6 God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, Only the rebellious dwell in a parched land.)

The relationship between humility and being led.  (Psalm 25:9  9 He leads the humble in justice, And He teaches the humble His way.)

God guides us by giving us proper desires in our hearts. (Psalm 21:2  2 Thou hast given him his heart's desire, And Thou hast not withheld the request of his lips. Selah.)

(Romans 8:9-17   9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.  10 And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.  11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.  12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh--  13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!"  16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,  17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.)

Galatians 5:18  18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. (Galatians 5:16-17  16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.  17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.)
