Biblical Concept: Good News

Vocabulary

1. euvagge,lion / euaggelion / eu = good, aggelion = message, news = good-news / gospel

Where did gospel come from? In Old English, it was translated as gōdspel (gōd "good" + spel "news".) The Old English term was retained as gospel in Middle English Bible translations and hence remains in use also in Modern English.”

Gospel is an inferior translation compared to good-news. Writers of the New Testament had never heard or used the word gospel.  Retain the tradition if you wish.  Just know it is good-news every time.

2. euvaggeli,zw / euaggelizo / eu = good, aggelizo = preach, bring or announce good-news / verbal form of good-news.

3. euvaggelisth,j / euaggelistes / eu = good, aggelistes = message = a good-messenger, evangelist

Where did evangelist come from? “From Old French evangeliste, from ecclesiastical Latin evangelista, from ecclesiastical Ancient Greek εὐαγγελιστής (euangelistes, "bringer of good news"), from εὐαγγελίζεσθαι ("to evangelize"), from εὐάγγελος (euangelos, "bringing good news"), from εὖ (eu, "well") + ἀγγέλλειν (angelein, "to announce").”

Writers of the New Testament had never heard or used the word evangelist.  Retain the tradition if you wish.  Just know it is good-messenger every time. (All three of them.)

For example: He did not go to the Antinomians and self-righteously proclaim them as such lawless sinners--“to those who are without law, as without law.”  The Antinomians are missing out on heaven because of the sin of unbelief in Jesus—John 16:9.

NAS 1 Corinthians 9:16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion; for woe is me if I do not preach the gospel. (See next below.)

 18 What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel without charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. (See the following context of 1 Corinthians 9:19-23.  Here, note the good-news to the following groups: Racial Jews, Legalists, Antinomians, Weak, All men.  Paul had good-news for everyone of these groups.  Paul subjugated his personal perspectives to the needs of each group, so as to present in the best possible way the Good-News of Jesus Christ. For example, He did not go to the Antinomians and self-righteously proclaim them as such lawless sinners.  The Antinomians are missing out on heaven because of the sin of unbelief in Jesus—John 16:9.)

NAS 1 Corinthians 15:1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,

 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

NAS 2 Corinthians 10:16 so as to preach the gospel even to the regions beyond you, and not to boast in what has been accomplished in the sphere of another.

NAS 2 Corinthians 11:7 Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you without charge?

NAS Galatians 1:8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. (Good-news, contrary, accursed.)

 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.

 11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.

 16 to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,

 23 but only, they kept hearing, "He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith which he once tried to destroy."

NAS Galatians 4:13 but you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time;

NAS Ephesians 2:17 And He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near;

NAS Ephesians 3:8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, (“grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ”)

NAS 1 Thessalonians 3:6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always think kindly of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you, (1 Thessalonians 3:6 context would not allow a translation other than “good news.”)

NAS Hebrews 4:2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard. (Hebrews 4:2 context required a “good news” translation.)

 6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, (Hebrews 4:6 context required a “good news” translation.)

NAS 1 Peter 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-- things into which angels long to look. (Gospel, angels long to look.)

 25 But the word of the Lord abides forever." And this is the word which was preached to you.

NAS 1 Peter 4:6 For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. (eivj tou/to ga.r kai. nekroi/j euvhggeli,sqh / “unto this for also dead ones the good-news is having been preached”) (Anyone with positive volition at God consciousness will get the good news.)

NAS Revelation 10:7 but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He preached to His servants the prophets.

NAS Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; (Tribulation, angel, “an eternal gospel,” earth.)
