Biblical Concept: Eye

Prologue: The various eye vocabulary are found 570 times in the NASB translation.  This study will collect and consider the most spiritually significant verses.

Findings: (From the Bible verses below.)

Eye, eyes often describe having spiritual vision, spiritual perspective, clear thinking, understanding, perception.

Eye, eyes often describe diverse human sins--under eyes below note the Proverbs references.

Matthew 13:15-16   15 For the heart of this people has become dull, And with their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes Lest they should see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I should heal them.'  16 "But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear.

“Ephesians 1:18   18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,”  - This verse and context (Ephesians 1:18-23) describes the height of human spiritual perception and spiritual orientation.  This verse and context are the most important in an understanding of the Biblical “eye.”  The key words are “in Christ.”  (See the Biblical Concept: In Christ.)  Principle: In Christ, your spiritual eyes work right.

Ephesians 1:18-23  18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,  19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might  20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,  21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.  22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,  23 which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.

Compare: Acts 26:18   18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.'

“Hebrews 12:2   2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  -This is the second most important verse and context in a study of Biblical “eyes.”

Hebrews 12:1-4  1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,  2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.  4 You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;
