Biblical Concept: Christ and the Cup

Luke 22:42, It was the Father’s will for Jesus to undergo the cup (sin bearing).  The cup was the most difficult (strengthening angel, v. 43; agony and drops of blood, v. 44) undertaking during the ministry of the God-man Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:24; Because Jesus “bore our sins in His body on the cross,” (the cup) was the means for placing the sins of the world in His body. Compare Romans 5:12-21 and John 18:11.

2 Corinthians 5:21a, (The cup) was the means for Jesus to come in contact with sin.

Hebrews 9:28a, (The cup) was the means for Jesus to bear the sins of many.

Mark 15:33-34, Jesus (drank the cup) for three hours on the cross.

Matthew 26:27-28, The cup represents the shed blood of Jesus on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.  Also 1 Corinthians 11:25.

Psalm 75:7-8, The cup represents the judgement of God.  Also Revelation 14:10c.

Isaiah 51:22, The cup represents the anger of God.  Also Revelation 14:10b.

Jeremiah 25:15-17, The cup represents the wrath of God.  Also Revelation 14:10a and 16:19.

Mark 10:38-39, The cup represents suffering.

Revelation 17:4, The cup represents human sins.
